Triple Bill: Leftovers | The Distance that Separates Us | Dance Story
Presented by Springboard Performance's 2016 Fluid Festival
Josh Martin | Company 605
"...But this is more than just weird virtuosity; Martin gives shape to the subconscious conflict between action and thought, and between past and present.
Natasha Gauthier, Ottawa Citizen
Performed by Company 605 Co-Artistic Director Josh Martin, this solitary dance began as an investigation surrounding an idea that the body holds a separate memory bank. Muscle tissue, bones, tendons and organs all storing their own accounts of past events, actions and trauma, with this collected information not readily shared or easily accessed by the mind. The process has been an exploration of how to consistently find, enter, and move through different states and sensations. In a constant effort to disconnect movement from thought, the dance is an attempt to externalize the inner moments of body recall, and an expansion of what gets churned up in the retrieval.
Leftovers was the winner of the 2014 Internationales Solo-Tanz-Theatre Festival in Stuttgart, where it received 1st Prize for Choreography and 2nd Prize for Performance.
The Distance that Separates Us
The Distance that Separates Us explores how we are increasingly connected yet find ourselves paradoxically more lonely. We are progressively more connected through all kinds of social media. Yet, can the impersonal, time independent, safely distant web, replace the intimate, immediate, ineffable experience of living life in person?
This new solo for Halifax-based dancer Jacinte Armstrong is a dance story by B.C.-based choreographer Sarah Chase. Chases works have earned her national and international acclaim for intricately weaving together storytelling and complex gestural movement patterns. Armstrongs unique and quirky presence will bring to life this lyrical, mathematical new work.
